Located in central Yangon, this mosque was established in 1885 by Chittagonians (now part of Bangladesh). Arab Muslim merchants landed at the ports such as Thaton, Martaban etc circa 652-660 A.D. Their ships sailed from Madagascan island to China and they used to go in and out of Burma. Islam is practiced by about 4% of the Myanmar but Muslims there, especially the Rohingya have suffered persecution, and many fled after the 2015 Rohingya refugee crisis and the military crackdown in 2016 and 2017.
